Year 2, Weeks 22–25 – Brisbane Storms, Bribie Island & Sunshine Coast Adventures

The next few weeks in Brisbane flew by, mostly filled with work and some absolutely wild storms! Wow, this side of the country certainly knows how to put on a show. Lightning, heavy rain, and strong winds — a reminder that the tropics aren’t messing around.

Our final weekend in Brisbane was spent on the Gold Coast visiting our friends. Once our month in the city was up, we headed to visit Greg and Tracie from Caravanning and Camping Oz. While there, they took us for a day out to Bribie Island, showing us the sights of this stunning place.

A huge storm had ripped through a few weeks prior, and you could still see the aftermath — so many trees knocked over! We 4WDed inland, popping out at one side of the island before heading to the other side and the beach. Greg and Tracie took us to Fort Bribie, an important site built during World War II to help protect Brisbane. The erosion over the years is very visible. Greg and Tracie told us that these structures used to be right in the dunes, but now sit on the beach with nothing to protect them from Mother Nature. Seeing them still standing but slowly being reclaimed by the ocean was both overwhelming and a little sad. One day, they may be gone entirely.

We continued our journey down the beach, soaking in the sights and history of the island. The following day we returned to Bribie Island for an epic seafood platter, celebrating a weekend full of sun, sand, and good company.

After our weekend adventures, we made the journey back to Leafy Lane Lakes for a two-week stay while Ryan was working on the Sunshine Coast. Sunny days, campfires, and smiles were in abundance, with the occasional jet ski for entertainment on the lake. We really do enjoy staying here — it feels like a little home away from home after so many visits!

Over the weekend, we visited one of our favourite Sunshine Coast breweries, 10 Toes Brewery, catching up with Dan and Liza from King’s Roaming. A perfect afternoon of good food, drinks, and laughs. We also took care of a few maintenance tasks on the van, including installing a new window blind that had broken — always satisfying to tick things off the list.

After our fortnight at Leafy Lane Lakes, we made the journey down to the Gold Coast to spend Christmas with friends, ready to enjoy the festive season and celebrate the end of another busy year on the road.
